Conditioned for Comfort

Keeping Cool Under Pressure

You never know how important something is until it’s not working anymore! Your climate control panel is integral to driver comfort. As summer approaches and the air begins to heat up, your air conditioning system becomes especially vital. Few things are worse than being stuck out in the heat and then getting into your vehicle just to realize the air won’t blow cold! Fortunately, Pat’s Auto Service Center knows a few ways to keep your air conditioning running smoothly as ice.

You Never Know What You Have Until It’s Gone

Summers down in Southeastern North Carolina can reach past 90 degrees Fahrenheit! That’s an extreme environment that can take its toll on both you and your vehicle. Everyone loves to spend their days at the beach, soaking up the sun, boating, fishing, and other activities in the greater Wilmington area during the summer. But after the day’s fun is over, chances are you’re going to want to get inside your vehicle and blast that air conditioning. But what do you do when it doesn’t blow cold? We’re certain you’re not going to be happy about it!

How Your Vehicle’s Climate Control Works

Your vehicle’s climate control focuses on taking a refrigerant called freon and transferring it from a liquid to a gas by controlling temperature and pressure. As the freon transforms, it absorbs heat and allows cool air to blow out of your vehicle’s ventilation system. There’s more to your air conditioning than most realize! It’s a complex mesh of parts including the compressor, condenser, dryer, metering device, and evaporator.

The compressor takes in low-pressure gas and transforms it to a higher pressure and temperature. A condenser will then reduce the temperature of the refrigerant while the freon transforms from a gas back to a liquid again. An air conditioning dryer does exactly as the name implies by removing water from the Freon solution and filtering it. The metering device will drop the pressure and thus reduce the temperature of the liquid, and the evaporator changes the coolant into gas allowing for the creation of new cool air.

Air Conditioning Problem? There Might Be a Leak

As with anything that operates under a pressurized environment, your air conditioning system needs to be sealed off from any outside environment. Any leak would compromise the system and allow freon and other refrigerant to escape. Leaks can also damage the entire system if left alone for too long! Without the right amounts of refrigerant, your compressor, and other components won’t run correctly.
