The Right Oil Keeps You Moving

Automotive experts agree that getting a regular oil change is an important part of vehicle maintenance. Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, and having a reputable auto shop with the correct oil makes all the difference. When it comes to the right type of oil for the job, the pros at Pat’s Auto Service can keep you moving.

Think of your vehicle like your own body. Just like with any other machine, there are a lot of parts and fluids to keep it moving. And just like with your health, you must take care of your vehicle to keep it running longer.

The Importance of Oil

Oil is one of the most important components of any engine. On its own, it doesn’t look very appealing but believe us when we say your vehicle can’t run without it. So, what is it about oil that makes it so important? Oil helps to lubricate your engine and keep it running smoothly. Without oil, the engine’s moving parts cause friction which can damage it over time and reduce performance. Clean oil also helps prevent the buildup of sludge in your engine, which can clog it and keep it from working effectively. You will also notice that good oil helps protect your engine components from wearing down prematurely and keep temperatures under control.

The right oil for your vehicle makes all the difference. Despite what you might think, it’s not a “one size fits all” situation. However, there are several types of oil used in the automotive industry. So how do you figure out which is best for your car, truck, or SUV?

Types of Oil

Conventional Oil
This is your most common type of oil. It has a lower resistance to heat and oxidation and thus requires changing more frequently.

Full Synthetic
A high-performing oil with a high tolerance to engine resistance and heat. This mixture is designed to last twice as long between oil changes. Full synthetic oil also allows for better anti-friction, and heat dispersing properties. All of this is formulated to help an engine run better for longer and with better fuel economy. Most new modern vehicles will require full synthetic oil.

Semi-Synthetic
Also known as a synthetic blend, this oil is a mixture of conventional and synthetic oil. These oils can reach a better level of performance than standard conventional varieties of oil.

The Importance of an Oil Change

Even the best engine oils don’t last forever. It’s important to get your oil changed frequently as your manufacturer, dealer, or preferred auto shop recommends. “It’s all about maximum efficiency,” says Pat’s Service Adviser Rob Harris.

Pat’s manager Dwight Roberts states, “It’s very important to always use the manufacturer-recommended oil in your vehicle. If not, it can cause drivability problems, a check engine light, and premature repairs.”

Again, the purpose of engine oil is to lubricate the engine to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. The less oil in your vehicle, the harder the engine must work creating more heat and pressure. Having your oil changed regularly can extend the lifespan of your engine, improve its performance, and increase gas mileage! The core functions of your engine also perform better when using clean oil. It’s also important to get the right oil filter installed when getting the oil changed on your vehicle. An oil filter’s job is to catch excess particles that oil helps to break down. Over time, this filter can become clogged with debris as it can only hold so much. If you’re not careful these particles can then seep into the engine over time causing sludge. The more of this gunk builds up, the bigger the strain on your engine. A vehicle that has become clogged with sludge can result in the total loss of the engine.

That’s why, in most modern vehicles it’s important to have your oil changed every 3,000 miles for conventional oil and every 5,000 miles for synthetic oil and synthetic blends.
